This Year's Project: Conservation of Ethnographic and Historic Items

About Our Organization

Friends of Homestead supports Homestead National Historical Park -- a National Park Service site -- through fundraising and advocacy. The Friends of Homestead works closely with the Park to provide funds for Park projects and programs, and most recently worked with donors to restore an original painting from the Washington DC capitol "The First Homesteader". This painting is now on permanent display at the Education Center. Funding from the Friends allows all activities at the Park site to remain free to all visitors, including the many schoolchildren who visit the Park annually.

Current Project: Conservation of Ethnographic and Historic Items

The Friends of Homestead in conjunction with the park has selected the above museum Items for conservation work.  Without funding from the Friends of Homestead these items would not be place on display for the general public.  The Friends of Homestead look forward to continued support of the conservation work on artifacts representing the tools and art of the homesteading era.  Priority is given to the ethnographic items (club, calument, and bow).  The club and bow are the only examples of these item types in the collection.  The historical items ( Hame, Kerosine Lamp, Teakettle, Meat Grinder, Carriage Lamp, Neck Yoke, and Foot Warmer) were donated by locals in the park’s early years and after the conservation work is completed will be placed on display for the general public.  The cost of conservation of these ten items would likely be over $8,000.00.  The hourly rate is $125.00 for conservation service, plus materials and documentation.  Please consider a donation on 1 hour of conservation serices, but whatever contribution amount is donated it truly is greatly appreciated.

Please see images of all ten items waiting funding for conservation work to be performed.
