The Nebraska P.E.O. Home in Beatrice is affectionately known as "The Home That Love Built." More than a nickname, the phrase reflects the vision, generosity, and enduring commitment of Nebraska P.E.O. members whose support has sustained the Home for more than eight decades.

A Vision Rooted in Generosity

The Home's history began in 1936, when Beatrice P.E.O. member Elizabeth Robertson informed leaders of the Nebraska State Chapter that J. Stewart and Mrs. Elliott wished to donate their stately residence to the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Following a visit to the property, committee members recognized the home's exceptional potential to serve as a permanent residence for aging P.E.O. sisters.

The gift was formally accepted in 1937, marking the beginning of an ambitious statewide undertaking. Nebraska P.E.O. members united behind a shared vision of creating a home where sisters could enjoy security, companionship, and compassionate care in a gracious, family-centered environment.

Establishing the Home

The Nebraska P.E.O. Home officially opened in 1938 as a residential care facility. Originally a seven-bedroom private residence, the home was thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of its residents while preserving the warmth and character of the original mansion.

As resident needs evolved, the Home underwent a series of carefully planned improvements. Renovations added private accommodations, modern bathrooms, accessibility enhancements, and, eventually, licensed assisted-living services, ensuring that the Home continued to provide high-quality care while maintaining its welcoming atmosphere.

Why Beatrice?

Beatrice was a natural choice for the Home. Established in 1857, the community offered a central location within Nebraska, and the donation of the Elliott residence provided an ideal setting for the organization to fulfill its vision. The Home quickly became both a valued part of the Beatrice community and a symbol of the statewide mission of the Nebraska State Chapter of P.E.O.

A Statewide Legacy of Service

From its founding, the Nebraska P.E.O. Home has represented a collective commitment by P.E.O. chapters across Nebraska. Generations of members have contributed through financial support, furnishings, volunteer service, and personal involvement. Traditions such as the Adopt-a-Resident program exemplify the enduring bonds between chapters and residents, reinforcing the Home's reputation as a place where compassion and fellowship flourish.

This broad-based support has enabled the Home to remain true to its founding purpose while adapting to the changing needs of those it serves.

Continuing the Mission

Today, more than 85 years after welcoming its first residents, the Nebraska P.E.O. Home continues to operate as a nonprofit licensed assisted-living residence at 413 North 5th Street in Beatrice. The Home primarily serves members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and eligible relatives, offering personalized care in an intimate setting that accommodates approximately 20 residents.

While the Home has evolved to meet modern standards of assisted living, its guiding principles remain unchanged. Residents continue to enjoy a supportive environment that values dignity, independence, companionship, and individualized care.

The Nebraska P.E.O. Home stands as a lasting testament to the generosity, vision, and dedication of countless Nebraska P.E.O. members. More than a residence, it remains a living expression of the Sisterhood's commitment to caring for one another—a legacy that continues to give meaning to its cherished name, "The Home That Love Built."
